Antique Late 17th Century Baroque 18k Gold and Sterling Silver Point Cut Diamond and Table Cut Ruby Ring
This stunning late 17th century ring features a classic trio of gems surrounded by Baroque embellishments. A duet of silver and 18k gold comprise the mounting, into which a point cut diamond and two table cut rubies have been placed. The pyramid of the diamond rises in perfect proportion from the central silver dome. A point cut diamond, one of the oldest diamond cuts is arguably also the most straightforward, originally emerging from the earth in the shape of an octahedron, thus only requiring a singular cut down the middle of the gemstone and some polishing to achieve this striking pyramidal point. To either side, ruby and gold dumplings are decorated with scalloped bases. Rail support shoulders provide an ample base with fastidious detailing. But the real kicker is the tell-tale radiant ring posterior, which is still marvelously defined despite the ring’s age. This piece likely originates from Hapsburg-era 17th century Austria and can be traced to Salzburg.
